Sailability

Cramond Sailability is CBC's sailing section for people with a disability. We are a Scottish Registered Charity and an accredited RYA Sailability Foundation Centre.
We aim to encourage and assist anyone who might otherwise be unable to go sailing to participate in the club's regular activities – for example learning to sail, taking part in club races, or simply enjoying an occasional recreational sail and events in CBC's social programme.

Recently the People's Postcode Trust awarded us a grant towards the purchase of a Hawk 20. This spacious, stable dayboat was co-designed by a disabled person so all the controls are easy to use, making it ideal for a wide range of sailors from complete beginners up, and particularly ones with visual or moderate mobility impairments.

The group also has a Challenger trimaran on long-term loan. This type of boat is virtually uncapsizeable and is especially good for sailors who do not have the use of one or more limbs.

HELP NEEDED!
The group is always looking to recruit volunteers to help both on and off the water, particularly in the summer months. You do not necessarily have to be able to sail yourself – Cramond Sailability also needs shore helpers for launching boats and providing other land-based assistance.
If you are a sailor, you could act as a volunteer skipper in the Hawk for taster sessions or recreational sailing, or even help our members compete in club races. Or you could buddy an inexperienced helm in the Challenger. In short, if you can spare a couple of hours or more a month, we'd love to hear from you!
A NOTE ABOUT ACCESS
In 2010 CBC's clubhouse saw extensive refurbishment, especially the downstairs toilets and changing areas. The upgrade included adding a completely separate disabled toilet/shower/changing room, along with a stairlift to make the bar and social areas of the club on the upper floor accessible to wheelchair users and others with mobility difficulties. There is a small step at the main entrance, but a portable ramp is kept in the lobby area if required.
